Scalamadrè is a well known name in the citrus fruit sector: just after the war business was mainly concentrated on the harvesting, drying and marketing of silk from the silkworms in the valleys of Calabria. France was the main market for silk and later the business was extended to include the marketing of dried figs, peaches for jam, and citrus fruit for domestic consumption and exportation. In the 1930s the Scalamandrè citrus fruit were marketed in Germany, Hungary and Austria, as well as all over Italy. In the 1970s the core business passed over from marketing to direct production of citrus fruit in order to provide the highest quality fruit for the most demanding consumers.
